TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

Belief about Education and Role of a Teacher

As I think education is the most powerful weapon one can have in the world to shape his/her future. Based on this belief, the role of a teacher in a classroom is like a plant caretaker. The caretaker should nurture the plant with care and protection to make it grow using the relevant fertilizer, water, and sunlight based on the type of the plant. In the same way, teacher’s duty in the classroom is to make the plants like children grow by providing them with necessary knowledge and support. Teacher should have a sound knowledge about each student and their proficiency level to help them grow successfully.

Core Values of the Classroom and Fostering a Positive Learning Environment

I believe that students should have the freedom to express themselves in the classroom which makes a safe and comfortable environment with low affective filter[1]. Also, as a teacher I try to find the unique learning styles of each student is essential through which I want to enhance their motivation to learn in a positive way. In addition, thriving to make a student - centered classroom where they have given the chance to collaborative learning with the control of the teacher in a positive way is another key factor. Incorporating creative and persuasive materials and activities parallel to the interests of the students foster a positive learning environment and always help students to remember what they have learned. Most importantly, I think of every student as a child who has the capability of learning based on various aspects. As a teacher, I try to encourage them always for the process of learning in the most comfortable way.

Teaching Philosophy based on Learning Theories

My teaching philosophy is based on three theoretical frameworks. First, it is the concept of collaborative learning proposed by Vygotsky (1978) in his socio-cultural learning theory. As Mcleod (2024) states Vygotsky has emphasized on collaborative learning through negotiation. I firmly believe learning through negotiation as it enhances the collaborative and active learning in the classroom. Secondly, Krashen’s low affective filter hypothesis (1982) that creates a comfortable learning environment is effective as I want my students to be risk takers in the classroom who are not afraid of making mistakes. This will aid in making students to feel more engaged with the language that they learn. Finally, Skinner’s positive reinforcement (1940) through which I believe that I can develop the motivation of students by complimenting.
